Civic 50 Award

Allstate recognized as one of the 50 most community-minded companies in the U.S.

Allstate Insurance Company was named an honoree of The Civic 50 by Points of Light, the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service. The award recognizes Allstate as one of the most community-minded companies in the United States.

“Allstaters care. The Civic 50 honor is a testament to the incredible passion our agency force and employees have for giving back in communities across America,” said Vicky Dinges, Allstate’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Responsibility. “Day in and day out, our people are making a difference. They’re helping youth learn critical life skills like persistence and confidence. They’re working tirelessly to end domestic violence. And they’re volunteering wherever and whenever they see a need. We care deeply about being a force for good in our customers’ lives.”

The Allstate Foundation, Allstate, its employees and agency force support a wide range of causes, with a focus on two social impact areas: youth empowerment and financial empowerment for domestic violence survivors. In 2017, Allstate enabled young leaders to donate more than 3.5 million service hours and raise $5.3 million for charitable causes through Allstate Foundation Good Starts Young-sponsored programs. In addition, Allstate Foundation Purple Purse helped 370,000 domestic violence survivors break free from abuse.

The Civic 50 showcases how companies can use their time, skills and other resources to improve the communities where they do business. The honorees are public and private companies with U.S. operations and revenues of $1 billion or more, and are selected based on four dimensions of their U.S. community engagement program: investment, integration, institutionalization and impact.

Allstate is Committed to Youth Empowerment

Allstate’s Good Starts Young® Inspires Partnership with WE

“WE is a movement that believes when we come together we can create an even better world.”

The Allstate Foundation Good Starts Young® program believes that youth should feel supported to follow their ambitions and create their own change. Each year, Allstate is a partner for WE, an organization committed to serving communities domestically and internationally.

By partnering with schools around the country and with international charities, WE encourages social service and volunteering by students, educators, and whole communities. Making an impact in sustainable ways has inspired Allstate to partner with WE for the past five years. Each year, WE hosts a number of “WE Day” events across the country. Students can’t buy a ticket and instead volunteer in their community to be invited to spend a day with other change-makers and inspiring storytellers and celebrities.

Allstate is a proud sponsor of WE Day and invites employees to volunteer at the event and spend the day celebrating the students and their accomplishments. This year, we also awarded grants to two special students to help propel their service projects.

Giving back is a core value at Allstate. In addition to the hundreds of volunteer hours completed by employees, Allstate is proud to be partnering with external organizations that amplify doing good. Allstate’s commitment to youth empowerment is one of the many reasons we value our partnership with WE. Read more on how Allstate and employees give back.

SHPE Regional Leadership Development Conference

Allstate Attends 2018 SHPE Regional Leadership Development Conference

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) held their 2018 Region 6 Leadership Development Conference (RLDC) at Chicago’s Sheraton Grand Hotel April 5-7. SHPE stages regional leadership development conferences on a yearly basis for the leadership of the SHPE chapters to improve their organizational, managerial, and technical skills.

This RLDC presented opportunities to network and gain new skills. The professional track workshops offered a plethora of events from networking to career advancement.

One of the workshops, Climbing the Corporate Ladder: Perspectives from C-Suite Latino Leaders and Women in STEM, featured Marisela, Divisional CIO, Encompass, and Professional Latino Allstate Network (PLAN) Member, as one of the panelists. The workshop was an interactive open discussion of life experiences and challenges faced climbing the corporate ladder and an overall view of what Latinos face in today’s ever changing workplace. Marisela provided valuable advice, such as pursuing opportunities you are passionate about even if you don’t have all the preferred skills at the time the opportunity is presented to you. She also shared her experiences being the only Latina in the room at leadership meetings.

David, Technology Senior Consultant, Law & Regulation, PLAN Member and SHPE Chicago board member, was also in attendance. David met with undergraduate students during the conference’s Resume Café to coach students on how to improve their resumes.

Allstate’s participation stems from recently becoming an Industrial PartnerSHPE Council (IPC) member. The Industry Partnership Council (IPC) is an integral part of Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) achieving the organizational mission of changing lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support and development.

“The National Society for Black Engineers (NSBE) has existed for 44 years and has evolved into an organization that has programs and membership extending from high school and college students to professionals in all disciplines of engineering. The goal and commitment of NSBE is to widen the pool of engineering talent from Black communities. NSBE is expanding its pipeline from third grade to graduate school by designing tools and programs that will support and nurture budding engineers. Through its 350 pre-collegiate, collegiate and professional chapters NSBE trains its 31,000 members for leadership within the organization and in business.

Some of the programs that NSBE has designed to prepare future engineers are: Competitions, Scholarships, Strategic Partnerships (e.g. GEM, ASCE, Society of Women Engineers, etc.) and Summer Engineering (SEEK – Summer Engineering for Kids). NSBE events include camps, competitions, conferences, webinars and conventions.

At this year’s convention 250 companies participated in the Career Fair with over 12,000 engineering students seeking internships and permanent positions. NSBE also sponsored sessions for mock interviews, resume review, dress for success and provided free headshots to all interviewees. There were several seminars and workshops designed for engineering students. There was also a small marketplace of vendors where attendees could purchase items such as jewelry, t-shirts and art.

The Allstate team included recruiters, hiring managers and individual contributors that represented different technology areas within the company. The highlight of the convention was the Career Fair where the Allstate booth was positioned in an excellent location. This gave us the opportunity to interface with a large amount of students. They discovered there is more to Allstate than expected. They discovered that there are opportunities in technology for engineers. We collected several hundred resumes of engineers interested in both internships and permanent employment.

What I found most rewarding was volunteering for Resume review. This gave me the opportunity to interact first-hand with students and young professionals. I found them to be intelligent, determined individuals with the desire to succeed. There was representation from schools across the country with even sophomores and freshmen preparing for internships. After working on resumes, I encountered some of them at the Career Fair and they reported success at obtaining interviews with their updated resumes. We also hosted a very successful Hospitality event where students could relax, eat and socialize while asking more questions about the company. Partnering with NSBE provides access to an untapped pool of resources that are potential, future innovators in technology. This was my first opportunity to represent the company at a career event and if asked to attend future conventions, my answer would be a definite Yes.”

Junior Achievement Award

Allstate Earns U.S. President’s Volunteer Service Award

Junior Achievement USA® (JA) has honored Allstate with a 2016-2017 U.S. President’s Volunteer Service Award. The U.S. President’s Volunteer Service Award was presented to 57 organizations at an evening awards ceremony during the JA Volunteer Summit, on March 13, 2018 in New York, NY.

“In 2003, President George W. Bush established the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation (the Council) to recognize the valuable contributions volunteers make in communities and encourage more people to serve. The Council created the President’s Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor individuals who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service. In 2006, Junior Achievement became an official certifying organization for this award, which recognizes corporations with a U.S. presence that provide volunteers to teach JA programs anywhere in the world.”

Throughout 2016 and 2017, Allstate agency owners and employees gave more than 5,000 hours of volunteer time to Junior Achievement programs. Allstate believes Good Starts Young® and through programs, like Junior Achievement, Allstate agency owners and employees help inspire youth to reach their full potential and make the world a better place.

“Junior Achievement volunteers are important mentors for young people, bringing our programs to life. JA volunteers share their experiences and skills with students while delivering our programs, teaching them how to manage their money, succeed in the workforce, or start a business that creates jobs and grows the economy. JA’s volunteers are critical to our organization’s success and are a vital part of our mission,” said Sandy Daffé, President of Junior Achievement of Chicago.

Allstate employees are committed to living into the Good Hands pillar of the company by serving not only customers but communities.

April is Allstate’s designated “Bring Out The Good Month” and this award is a perfect launch pad as the whole company prepares to devote even more hours to giving back. Read more about Allstate’s local community involvement and empowering youth to be future leaders here.
