Allstate Attends 2018 SHPE Regional Leadership Development Conference
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) held their 2018 Region 6 Leadership Development Conference (RLDC) at Chicago’s Sheraton Grand Hotel April 5-7. SHPE stages regional leadership development conferences on a yearly basis for the leadership of the SHPE chapters to improve their organizational, managerial, and technical skills.
This RLDC presented opportunities to network and gain new skills. The professional track workshops offered a plethora of events from networking to career advancement.
One of the workshops, Climbing the Corporate Ladder: Perspectives from C-Suite Latino Leaders and Women in STEM, featured Marisela, Divisional CIO, Encompass, and Professional Latino Allstate Network (PLAN) Member, as one of the panelists. The workshop was an interactive open discussion of life experiences and challenges faced climbing the corporate ladder and an overall view of what Latinos face in today’s ever changing workplace. Marisela provided valuable advice, such as pursuing opportunities you are passionate about even if you don’t have all the preferred skills at the time the opportunity is presented to you. She also shared her experiences being the only Latina in the room at leadership meetings.
David, Technology Senior Consultant, Law & Regulation, PLAN Member and SHPE Chicago board member, was also in attendance. David met with undergraduate students during the conference’s Resume Café to coach students on how to improve their resumes.
Allstate’s participation stems from recently becoming an Industrial PartnerSHPE Council (IPC) member. The Industry Partnership Council (IPC) is an integral part of Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) achieving the organizational mission of changing lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support and development.
